Two years ago in the Upper Room, we did a lesson series entitled Unlikely Heroes (and yes, we broke some copyright laws with the above picture). In the series, we examined the lives of several amazing individuals that God used in extraordinary ways. We highlighted well-known individuals like Bill Bright, Jim Eliott, and C. J. Mahaney; but we also included to our short list Everett Miller. Mr. Everett was an amazingly faithful believer who possessed a larger than life love for the local church. He was an inspiration for so many, including myself. He joined Ninth and O Baptist Church in the late 1950s and served in many capacities including chairman of the deacons and Sunday School Superintendent ("Sunday School" is an antiqued term that previous generations used to describe small group ministry...ha). Mr. Everett passed away this week and I attended his funeral today. It was my honor to be at the funeral of such an amazing human being. In a society that admires athletes, movie stars, and politicians, true heroes like Mr. Everett are too easily overlooked.
