Traumatized Riley

Took Riley for her "yearly" check for urinary reflux improvement on Tuesday... We were at Kosairs a total of 1.5 hours! What a blessing - Our shortest trip there ever! The ultrasound wasn't as rough as it could have been, but she cried and wimpered through most of it. We would have a few minutes of relief when Dora sang especially loud. The xray process was another story. It was absolutely terrible. This year we walked into the room and my eyes were immediately glued to the straight board and restraints laying under the xray machine. They explained that they were going to use them for her and that once in them, we would not be allowed near her. We had to watch as they braced her head and then restrained her with her arms above her head and a catheter in! She ended up being in them for about 30-35 minutes! Keep in mind that she is totally awake and we were within her eyesight. My poor little girl had no idea what was going on and no idea that if she had peed a little quicker we would have been out of there a little earlier. She just screamed her head off... I cried.

Took her for her follow up with the actual dr the next day and mentioned it - Found out we had what seems to be the only radiologist at Kosairs that has become fond of restraining his patients. Great.

Good new: One side(was at level 2 last yr) has totally cleared up.

Bad News: The other side has shown NO improvement... Still at level 3. No UTI's for almost a year so the antibiotics are doing there job.

More Good News: We don't have to do this again for another 18 months! And the nurse practitioner for Dr Cassal(pediatric urologist) put in for us to be given the option of sedation when the appointment is finally made.

My heart just melts for little Riley. How horrible to be subject to that type of exam. I had to have my middle son put on a papoose board twice due to needing stitches under his chin. A horrible thing for a parent to deal with. I am glad things worked out and next time sedation...Hope to see you Sunday. Love, Joyce
